Are you familiar with the term ‘morally grey’? It describes a situation or character that is neither wholly good nor bad but exists somewhere in between. This archetype has become increasingly popular in today’s media, raising an important question: Is the wider audience becoming accustomed to it and, perhaps inadvertently, using it to justify being morally grey in situations where it shouldn’t be?

The portrayal of morality in characters has evolved significantly over time. In the early days of storytelling, narratives thrived on the dichotomy of 

, offering clear distinctions between virtue and vice. However, as human experiences grew more intricate, so did our characters. This shift reflects the reality that morality is rarely black and white. But it also prompts us to consider how such portrayals influence our perceptions and values. As we consume such media, we must ask ourselves: Are we drawn to these characters because they echo the shades of grey within ourselves, or are they subtly undermining our ability to discern right from wrong?

In today’s media-driven culture, popular media personalities, even if fictional, play an increasingly significant role in shaping young minds. Their influence often contributes to shifting moral standards, leading to concerns about a ‘moral values crisis’ or ‘declining moral values’. If our values, an entity which weaves the very fabric of humanity, become deeply corrupted, we must ask ourselves: What ripple effects will follow?

This influence is magnified by the sheer volume of media we consume. If we examine our screen time, not just for doom scrolling but for all the content we engage with, we’ll uncover one of the many factors shaping today’s moral scale, personality, opinions, and individual perspectives. Some may argue that humanity has been a mix of good and bad since time immemorial, but we must consider how variables like media consumption affect our understanding of right and wrong.

When discussing morally grey characters in popular media, we should also critically examine the justifications provided for their actions. While all characters are given some justification, are they always valid? A perfect example is Berlin from the hit Spanish Netflix

 He is portrayed as a charismatic and “complex” character, someone who makes tough decisions, plays the “bad guy” when necessary, and focuses on the bigger picture. These traits fuel the Berlin craze. Yet, how many of us remember that Berlin raped a hostage in Season 1? This act is objectively reprehensible, but it is often overshadowed by his charm and complexity. Many fans express admiration for the character but fail to consciously distinguish between appreciating his complexity in the storyline and recognizing that he committed such an act. This blurring of lines is not just problematic—it’s dangerous. This selective memory highlights a critical issue with how audiences engage with such characters, at risk of 

normalizing them, consciously or otherwise. This, in turn, highlights the burning question of this article: the ever-present and omnipresent phenomenon of morally grey characters.

Films with similar themes wield comparable influence. For instance, the recent Bollywood release 

 featuring Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna, has faced criticism for glorifying abuse and violence. While fans defended these elements on the grounds of entertainment value and artistic freedom, their societal impact, especially on impressionable audiences, cannot be ignored. This issue is particularly pronounced in regions like the Indian subcontinent, where cultural and societal norms intersect with media consumption. Consider, for example, a boy from a rural village. A harsh reality is that most kids in rural areas, and a significant number in urban areas, grow up with domestic violence as a staple in their lives. Whether it’s their mothers being abused by their fathers, their aunts by their uncles, or their neighbors by their husbands, the cycle persists. For such individuals, media that romanticizes abuse or statements like “a man doesn’t fully love their partner unless they slap them” can reinforce harmful patterns, perpetuating cycles of violence under the guise of love or strength.

Moving beyond cinema to novels, we see a similar trend. One particularly concerning niche is the genre of 

, this content often appears in the feeds of people who are neither aware of its existence nor inclined to engage with it. The primary target audience is young adults, especially females, and upon conversing with them, one discovers that much of this audience is consuming disturbing content masked as ‘dark romance.’ Often referred to as ‘soft porn,’ it holds the potential to reshape perceptions of relationships, abuse, and masculinity, potentially altering ideals at a formative stage.

As communication and interaction have grown over time, so too has the exchange of ideas and mutual influence. This interconnectedness is not inherently bad but is a fact we must acknowledge as we analyze the impact of morally grey characters. The portrayal of such characters is not inherently problematic; in fact, they add depth and realism to stories. However, if we are not mindful, the normalization of such portrayals can shift societal standards in subtle yet significant ways.

By remaining aware of these influences, we can enjoy complex narratives without losing sight of the values that define us. The challenge lies in appreciating the depth and nuance of morally grey characters while recognizing the potential dangers of justifying behaviors that undermine our collective moral compass.

Between Right & Wrong: Between Joker & Berlin

, stands as a beacon of inclusive education and cultural diversity. Ranked 3rd among Indian universities by the

 it attracts students from across the country who arrive with high expectations—not only of academic excellence but also of a secure, nurturing environment. 

The university’s progressive stance on women’s education has been widely acknowledged, and despite lingering preconceived notions, its atmosphere, particularly for women living in 

, is largely welcoming. However, beneath this commendable image lie gaps in infrastructure and systemic issues that challenge the narrative of safety and inclusivity the institution projects.

Safety is a stated priority of the administration, and during the daytime, the campus does feel secure. Departments, hallways, canteens, and libraries are bustling with activity, creating a lively atmosphere where women report feeling at ease. Yet, this security dissipates as the sun sets. For women attending evening classes or studying late at the library, the campus transforms into an intimidating space. Poor lighting, insufficient security personnel, and inadequate surveillance in key areas contribute to a sense of vulnerability.

Gate No. 7 stands as a glaring example of this issue. The area is so poorly lit that even recognizing faces becomes impossible, raising concerns about safety and accountability in the event of harassment. Women residing in hostels near Gate No. 8 share similar fears, describing their nightly walks back as unnerving. Some even avoid venturing out alone after dark. In a city like Delhi, where women already navigate public spaces with caution, the lack of adequate lighting on a university campus feels like a fundamental oversight.

Such infrastructural deficiencies beg the question: 

Does a university ranked among the nation’s best truly reflect the standards it claims to uphold? 

This sense of insecurity is compounded by the curfew timings imposed on women’s hostel residents. While these restrictions may stem from a place of good intention, they inadvertently reinforce a sense of inequality. 

By curtailing women’s freedom to move freely even within campus premises after 10 PM, the institution shifts the burden of safety onto women rather than addressing systemic shortcomings. This approach raises uncomfortable questions about how much faith the administration itself places in the campus’s safety measures.

Another significant gap lies in the lack of comprehensive CCTV surveillance. While certain areas are monitored, vast sections of the campus remain uncovered. This inconsistency has real consequences: incidents of harassment might have been prevented or resolved more swiftly had there been proper surveillance. 

he absence of adequate security infrastructure not only makes women feel unsafe but also undermines the institution’s commitment to protecting its students. Furthermore, the 

, which should serve as a safe and accessible avenue for addressing grievances, is often viewed as opaque and unapproachable, discouraging women from seeking redress.

The presence of unauthorized individuals on campus has also been a recurring issue. Although the university has made efforts to curb this, the lingering presence of unaffiliated men continues to be a source of discomfort for many women. While not all interactions lead to harassment, the mere presence of unfamiliar and unsupervised men in spaces meant for students fosters an environment of unease.

These physical and systemic gaps are further complicated by societal attitudes, which seep into the university’s culture despite its progressive stance. Women report being judged for their clothing choices, regardless of whether they dress boldly or modestly. Those who adhere to traditional norms, including women observing 

, often face unsolicited advice, sometimes couched in religious rhetoric. Conversely, women who dress more modernly recount experiences of being scrutinized or objectified.

Yet, it is essential to acknowledge the positives. Many women emphasize that they feel safer and more respected on Jamia’s campus than in other parts of Delhi or even on other university campuses. The university’s efforts to foster inclusivity and provide dedicated spaces for women are praiseworthy and appreciated. However, these advancements cannot overshadow the pressing need to address the existing gaps in infrastructure, security, and cultural sensitivity.

As students of such a prestigious institution, it is incumbent upon us to engage critically with these issues. A campus that prides itself on inclusivity and academic excellence must also be a space where every student, regardless of gender, feels genuinely safe and respected. Addressing these challenges requires collective action—from the administration, faculty, and students alike. By fostering open dialogue, demanding accountability, and advocating for systemic change, we can transform Jamia into a model of true inclusivity and safety. If we fail to act, we not only compromise the well-being of current students but also the integrity of the institution and the generations it seeks to inspire.

Scientists were trying to discover a way to change ordinary metals into gold. While they didn't quite succeed in that endeavor, their efforts ended up laying the groundwork for modern chemistry.

." He pioneered numerous chemical processes still used today, including crystallization, distillation, and evaporation. Jabir discovered key substances like hydrochloric acid, nitric acid, and aqua regia. His emphasis on systematic experimentation laid groundwork for the scientific method. Jabir introduced the concept of alkali and made crucial observations about metallic properties. His works, translated into Latin, greatly influenced medieval European alchemists and chemists. Beyond chemistry, Jabir contributed significantly to medicine, pharmacy, and metallurgy. His diverse achievements helped shape the foundations of modern science and scientific methodology.

, had far-reaching effects on the world, influencing many aspects of science, medicine, and daily life. Despite their significance, the origins of these innovations are often not widely recognized or credited to the Muslim world today.

 of names, discoveries, and books, much is lost, discredited, and whitewashed. When we choose to stay unaware and not appreciate these contributions, when we choose not to spread awareness about them, we lose touch with our roots and, in the process, develop a sense of insecurity. We are a people with a rich history, heritage, and identity, yet we have lost much of it in our attempt to conform to the modern world. We are asked by the Qura’an to make use of our 

 (intellect) and to acquire knowledge, an endeavor exemplified by these great minds. It is important to note that all the mentioned figures—and even those who are not—were people of knowledge, not only of this world but also of the 

 (religion). They pursued worldly knowledge without compromising on their deen. They were well-versed in science, medicine, engineering, astrology, literature, history, geography, and also in 

 (detailed commentary of the Qura’an), 

Why have we come to associate acquiring religious knowledge with backwardness and a side quest, when it should be of the utmost priority? These scholars are an example for us all, showing that we can hold on to our deen while excelling in various fields of study. Muslims are meant to be the torchbearers and examples for the rest of humanity, but unfortunately, we have plunged back into the dark days. Yet, we have the potential to reclaim our rich heritage and lead the way once again, by embracing both religious and worldly knowledge. The legacy of these scholars reminds us that faith and intellect can thrive together, guiding us to a brighter future. Today, we have more resources at our disposal than ever before, and it is now up to us to use them to their fullest potential. It is upon us now to do for ourselves what our scholars once did for us.

The Abbasids had more wealth than they knew how to manage, and combined with the religious encouragement to pursue knowledge, Harun al-Rashid funded numerous scholarly endeavours. In this piece, we will explore the outcomes of these investments, uncovering discoveries that many of us may not know about.

, the seventh Abbasid caliph and son of al-Rashid, shared his father's interest in knowledge and played a key role in promoting scientific research. He funded the 

, along with many other scholarly endeavours.

, was personally encouraged by Al-Ma'mun. He became the Father of Algebra, which is now the foundation of modern mathematics, engineering, and science. The word "Algebra" itself comes from the title of his treatise, Al-Jabr. The term "Algorithm" is derived from "Algorism," the method of performing arithmetic with Hindu-Arabic numerals developed by Al-Khwarizmi. He also made significant contributions to trigonometry, creating accurate sine and cosine tables and the first table of tangents.

, the "Philosopher of the Arabs," a 9th-century Muslim polymath who made significant contributions across multiple fields. He pioneered the integration of Greek philosophy with Islamic thought and introduced Indian numerals to the Islamic world. 

 advanced cryptography through frequency analysis and made important contributions to medicine, particularly in pharmacology and ophthalmology. His work in physics included studies on 

 (a philosophical approach that emphasises the role of sensory experience and observation as the primary source of knowledge) and rational thought in studying natural phenomena helped lay the groundwork for the scientific method in the Islamic world. His prolific writings, later translated into Latin, influenced both Islamic and European scholarship for centuries, bridging ancient Greek knowledge with medieval scientific thought.

, Khaldun believed that labour, not gold or silver, was the true source of wealth. He also advocated for the division of labour nearly 400 years before Smith did, sparking debates over who should hold the title of the "Father of Economics." His best-known book, The 

or "Introduction," is one of the most important works on universal history wherein we are introduced to a new lens to view world history, among other novel ideas. Some consider it the first commentary on the social sciences, covering sociology, demography, cultural history, Islamic theology, historiography, the philosophy of history, economics, political theory, and ecology. His insights have been compared to those of European thinkers like 

, suggesting that his work laid the foundation for multiple fields of knowledge long before the European Enlightenment.

The Book of Knowledge of Ingenious Mechanical Devices’,

 documented 100 mechanical devices and provided instructions for constructing them, marking a significant contribution to early mechanical engineering. His creations, from water-raising machines to musical automata and intricate clocks, introduced principles that would later play a crucial role in robotics and cybernetics. Al-Jazari’s work bridged the knowledge of ancient mechanics with modern engineering, leaving a lasting influence on Islamic and European technological development.

One might not expect that one of the most influential figures in the history of astronomy was a 

, known in the West as Albategnius. Often called "the Ptolemy of the Arabs,". Al-Battani's groundbreaking observations shaped our understanding of annular solar eclipses. This led to highly accurate calculations of Earth's obliquity, the solar year, and equinoxes (a phenomenon when the Sun crosses directly above Earth's equator, appearing neither north nor south). His data would go on to be used by renowned astronomers like 

. Al-Battani also revolutionised geometrical calculations by introducing sines and tangents, replacing older Greek methods. His work in trigonometry even helped devise an equation to determine the qibla (direction of prayer for Muslims), a method that remained in use until refined by al-Biruni a century later. Al-Battani’s contributions were pivotal in advancing the fields of science and astronomy, influencing both the Islamic world and Western scholars alike.

In such a short introduction one can gather that the work of these scholars laid the foundation for countless modern advancements, yet much of their legacy remains overlooked or forgotten. As we revisit these remarkable contributions, it’s inspiring to recognize their profound and lasting impact on the global stage and Muslims' pivotal role in advancing human knowledge. These names and achievements are just a glimpse of the many others that have shaped our civilization. Some scholars extend the Golden Age to six and a half centuries, encompassing the early Islamic conquests. Others limit it to a few decades following the death of 

. In the early 20th century, the term "Golden Age" was primarily associated with the military conquests of the 

. It was only in the latter half of the 20th century that the term became synonymous with the flourishing of knowledge, science, and culture.

The causes of this extraordinary period were manifold, rooted deeply in the teachings of Islam and the historical circumstances of the time. The 

, which place great importance on the pursuit of knowledge—both religious and scientific—played a significant role in motivating Muslims to seek out and preserve wisdom from all corners of the world. The Caliphate actively encouraged scholars in their pursuits, providing them with the resources and support necessary to advance their work. One of the most notable examples of this encouragement was the 

. This effort was not only a means of preserving knowledge but also of integrating it into the Islamic intellectual tradition.

, the House of Wisdom, also known as the Grand Library of 

, was the epicenter of this intellectual movement. Scholars from around the world, representing diverse cultures and disciplines, gathered at the House of Wisdom to translate and build upon the knowledge of previous civilizations. They did not merely preserve the works of ancient Greece, Persia, and India; they critically engaged with them, developing new theories and ideas that would shape the future of science, philosophy, and culture. However, recent scholarship has questioned the existence of the House of Wisdom as a singular institution, suggesting that it may be a myth constructed by orientalists in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Regardless of its physical existence, the spirit of intellectual curiosity and collaboration that it symbolizes was undoubtedly real and profoundly influential.

The expansion of the Islamic Empire during this period also played a crucial role in the flourishing of knowledge. As the empire grew, it came into contact with a wide range of cultures, languages, and intellectual traditions. This cultural diversity enriched Islamic civilization, fostering an environment of openness and exchange. At the same time, the expansion of the empire necessitated the development of a unifying language and culture. Arabic became the 

of the Islamic world, facilitating communication and trade across vast distances. The introduction of paper, which was adopted from the Chinese, revolutionized the way knowledge was documented and disseminated, making it easier to record and share information across the empire.

The great emphasis on learning in the Islamic tradition is reflected in numerous Hadiths attributed to 

Seeking knowledge is obligatory upon every Muslim

". This profound statement laid the foundation for a system of education that began in early childhood and continued throughout a person's life. Children were taught Arabic and the 

from a young age, either at home or at a mosque. Once they had mastered the basics, some went on to study 

(Islamic jurisprudence), which were considered equally important. This early emphasis on education, particularly religious education, created a society in which knowledge was highly valued and widely accessible.

However, this commitment to education extended beyond religious studies. The Islamic Golden Age was characterized by a broad intellectual curiosity that encompassed the natural sciences, mathematics, medicine, and the arts. 

, or Islamic schools, emerged during this time as institutions of higher learning that formalized education and gained the support of the ulemas, the religious scholars. These madrasas multiplied throughout the Islamic world, helping to spread Islamic learning beyond urban centers and to unite diverse Islamic communities in a shared cultural project.

One of the most striking examples of the Islamic Golden Age's intellectual achievements was the city of 

in Muslim-ruled Spain. During the 10th century, Córdoba surpassed 

 as Europe's largest and most sophisticated city. It became a leading center of education and learning, producing numerous polymaths such as 

, and many others. These scholars made significant contributions to a wide range of disciplines, from philosophy and theology to medicine and astronomy. Their work not only advanced knowledge within the Islamic world but also laid the groundwork for the 

, influencing Western thought for centuries to come.

We must reflect on the achievements of the Islamic Golden Age, the traces they’ve left and the contributions they made. This is but one way of reconnecting with our past and embracing the values that fueled the Golden Age—curiosity, openness, and a commitment to learning.

The Islamic Golden Age - An amateur's start

In general, every social, religious, and ethnic group in the world is conscious of its identity. One usually derives their identity from the history, geography, and cultural background of a particular region, along with its continued civilizational flow. In the complex modern world where we live, we all share multiple identities. Identity crises are common due to clashes between the various “realities” of our lives. These crises become much more pronounced for young Muslims due to an apparent divide between our traditional values and the seemingly antithetical values of the modern liberal world. Muslims in general, and young Muslims in particular, try to balance these two different realities to navigate their identities throughout their lives.

The reasons why young Muslims suffer from identity crises can be broadly classified into two categories: those of a general nature, experienced by all young demographics, and those specific to the Muslim identity issue. In this article we focus on the latter.

The first and foremost issues are related to clashes between cultural and religious identities. Thousands of years of cultural history does not get uprooted easily as they are entrenched in every aspect of our lives. Cultural traditions are held dear by nearly all who are born into them, as it is the only way of life known to them for most of history. People around the world have localized Islam and given it a cultural version that often puzzles young Muslims. These versions can seem inauthentic, and with the critical attitude brought about by globalization, young Muslims struggle to defend these incoherent hybrid models of Islam. Often, those who cannot differentiate between cultural and religious practices fall into the false notion of either embracing “this Islam” entirely or rejecting “all Islam” altogether. This leads to a crisis as the very foundation of their lives shakes, causing alienation from friends and families. This often happens due to a lack of education and familiarity with the subject matter, leading to misunderstandings based on hearsay and localized notions that no longer make sense in modern times. Exposure to negativity on social media exacerbates this issue.

Young Muslims try hard to fit in with the mainstream to avoid being singled out and scrutinized. The pressure to conform to the mainstream culture of the modern Western world, driven by peer pressure and fear of social ridicule, leads to comparisons and standards of “high life” that do not align with Islamic values, causing mental health issues. The community itself lacks unity and uniformity, and the self-critical approach towards their own people does not help. Religious guides often cannot help due to their lack of awareness and inability to understand the problems of young Muslims, refusing to acknowledge them, let alone present a solution. The fear of new technology as anti-Islamic has led some to become luddites, afraid of embracing change and remaining irrationally conservative. One fine example is the ban on the printing press imposed by the Muslim clergy upon its introduction. Notably, it wasn’t accepted until four centuries after its invention. At these points, following such leaders can seem like hindering self-development and growth, shunning progress in general, and remaining bound by obsolete cultural and religious traditions. To shield themselves from new ideas, the religious elite have adopted self-isolation instead of facing challenges and positively engaging with new themes and ideas that could provide a way forward for the Muslim 

Religious ideas, notions, and understandings need to be reinterpreted in light of new developments and discoveries. A dedicated group of people is needed to fill the roles of guides and carefully evolve understanding in an informed way, helping individuals overcome their challenges. Traditionally, this role was played by scholars and spiritual guides in the Islamic tradition, but much of the current Muslim population lacks such leaders.
